The city of Bridgeport, Connecticut is situated in Fairfield County. It is at the southern part of the state of Connecticut in an area known as the Long Island Sound, which is the estuary between Connecticut and Long Island. Bridgeport CT is the most populated city in the Constitution State and nearly 150,000 people call this place their home. Bridgeport today is known for its system of public parks, earning it the moniker of ‘Park City’.

Bridgeport got its actual name due to the drawbridges (‘bridge’) built over the Pequonnock River as well as from being a coastal city used as a ‘port’ to facilitate maritime commerce. The Native American Paugussett tribe inhabited the area prior to English colonization, which occurred around 1644. The British farming community grew in Bridgeport and the town evolved into a center of trade, whaling, and shipbuilding.  In 1821, the town was incorporated, becoming the City of Bridgeport in 1836. 

Early settlers of the area performed farming and fishing.  The Black Rock Harbor’s strategic location enabled the settlers to make the shift to becoming traders and manufacturers. With the introduction of the railways in 1840, Bridgeport morphed into the center of a booming industry. The town produced everything from sewing machines to ammunition. Manufacturing remained essential to the local economy until the 1970s.

Bridgeport is credited as the birthplace of the popular flying disc toy, the frisbee. This is because in 1871, William Russell Frisbie founded and set up the Frisbie Pie Company there. The town is also home to the first Subway restaurant, which opened in 1965.  Additionally, Bridgeport is famous for Phineas Taylor Barnum (P. T. Barnum), who is the showman from the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.Barnum also served as Bridgeport’s mayor during the late 19th century.
