Norwalk, Connecticut is located in the southwestern section of the state. It is in southern Fairfield County and on the northern shore of Long Island Sound. This led to most of the town being burned down. In 1853, disaster struck again in the form of the Norwalk rail accident. This was the first ever train disaster in the United States.
Despite this, Norwalk emerged as a major railroad stop for the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad in the 19th and 20th century. In 1910, South Norwalk and the remaining parts of the town of Norwalk were both combined to form the current city of Norwalk. The tragedy didn’t end with the railroad accident. In 1955, there were multiple hurricanes that hit the city and caused Norwalk Harbor to flood. During the 1970s, efforts were taken to historically preserve South Norwalk. This is one reason why Washington Street Historic District exists today.
