Norwalk, Connecticut is located in the southwestern section of the state. It is in southern Fairfield County and on the northern shore of Long Island Sound. The city has a population of nearly 90,000. Norwalk CT lies within the New York metropolitan area, which is the largest metro area in the world based on urban landmass. Other Connecticut cities in the New York metropolitan area include New Haven, Bridgeport, Stamford, Waterbury, and Danbury, meaning six of the seven largest cities in the Nutmeg State lie within the area.

1649 marks the year when Norwalk was first settled. It was incorporated 2 years later, in 1651. The city was named after the Algonquin word noyank, which means “point of land”. It could also be related to ‘Naramauke’, which was the name of the Native American tribe. In 1779, The Battle of Norwalk took place as a part of the Revolutionary War. This led to most of the town being burned down. In 1853, disaster struck again in the form of the Norwalk rail accident. This was the first ever train disaster in the United States.

Despite this, Norwalk emerged as a major railroad stop for the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad in the 19th and 20th century. In 1910, South Norwalk and the remaining parts of the town of Norwalk were both combined to form the current city of Norwalk. The tragedy didn’t end with the railroad accident. In 1955, there were multiple hurricanes that hit the city and caused Norwalk Harbor to flood. During the 1970s, efforts were taken to historically preserve South Norwalk. This is one reason why Washington Street Historic District exists today.

Sheffield Island is an island off the coast of Norwalk which has the 150+ year-old Sheffield Island Lighthouse. Tourists and locals can also visit the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion or go for a walk in Calf Pasture Beach.
