East Hartford, Connecticut is a small town on the east bank of the Connecticut River. East Hartford CT is directly across from Hartford, Connecticut. The town includes the neighborhoods of Burnside and Hockanum. It has a total area of 18.7 square miles with a population of 51,252 in 2010. East Hartford is famous as the home of the aerospace manufacturer Pratt and Whitney. In 1659, Thomas Burnham bought the land that is now East Hartford from Tantinomo. Tantinomo was the chief sachem of the Podunk Indians.
Burnham lived on the land and later willed it to his nine children. Founded in 1635, the town of Hartford once included the present towns of East and West Hartford. It also contained Manchester, Bolton, and Vernon. October 1783 saw the incorporation of East Hartford as a separate town. In the late 19th century, residents formed tax districts for public works for fire protection, street lighting, sanitation, etc. The General Assembly granted a charter to the East Hartford Fire District in 1889.
1915 and 1916 saw the formation of the Hockanum Sewer District and Lighting District. With 1925 came The Silver Lane Fire and Lighting District. On 10th June 1929, voters of the town approved a new charter wherein all old districts were abolished and a Town Council would govern the municipality. When it was first settled, East Hartford was an agricultural county growing tobacco. But all this changed soon. In 1929, Frederick Rentschler, head of the new Pratt and Whitney Plane Company moved production to East Hartford was the head of this company. The production site was a sprawling 1100 acre inclusive of an airfield.
This Rentschler Field worked as an airport from 1931-1999 and the company used it for test flights and maintenance. United Technologies donated it to the state of Connecticut in 1999. East Hartford houses the Pratt & Whitney Stadium in Rentschler Field used for soccer and football. This world-famous stadium has a capacity of 40,000 people. The stadium is named after Pratt and Whitney, but the actual field remains Rentschler Field.
