The state flag of the Connecticut has three grapevines that signify the three oldest European settlements. One of these is Wethersfield, the other two being Windsor and Hartford. The name of the town came from Wethersfield, a village in Essex. The town was incorporated with Windsor and Hartford on 21st February 1637.

Katherine Harrison was convicted in the year 1669. Her sentence was changed later on, but she was evicted from the town and all her property was taken away by her neighbours.

Yale University was located in the region from 1716 to 1718. From the late 1700s to mid-1800s, Wethersfield was the centre of the onion trade in New England. The Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department was the first chartered fire department of Connecticut and is one of the oldest chartered fire departments in the United States of America.
