Stonington, Connecticut is a town that is located in the southeastern corner of the state. Stonington CT is situated in New London County. Stonington includes parts of the villages of Pawcatuck, Lords Point, Wequetequock and the eastern part of Mystic and old Mystic villages.
It took quite a while for the town to finalize its name. The Massachusetts referred to the region as “Souther Towne” or Southerton in 1658 and was officially included in Connecticut less than half a decade later in the year 1662.
The name underwent another change in 1665. This time it was renamed to “Mistick”. It got the name Stoning in 1666, which meant “Stony town”. From this, Stonington was born. The townspeople had good trade relations with the West Indies.
However, North Stonington was set off from Stonington in 1724 and became a separate town in 1807. The region of Stonington gained a lot of wealth in 1790 as a fleet engaged in seal hunting settled in its harbour.
The region faced two major British naval bombardments. The harbour of the town contains a building that was erected in 1823 and is also home to one of the first lighthouses made by the federal government, the Stonington Harbor Light, now The Old Lighthouse Museum.
The region also has a small granite Customs House that faces the main street and it is present to the north of Cannon Square. The town now has a population of nearly 20,000.
