Colchester, Connecticut is a town that is situated in New London County, United States. Colchester CT had a population of 16,068 at the 2010 census.  The town was conferred to Danial Mason, son of Major John Mason in 1692. The area was initially known as the Plantation of the Twenty-mile River.

The town was renamed on 11th May 1699 and attached to the colony of New London.  The Colchester name bears resemblance with borough port in Essex, England. The early history of Colchester focused on the church parishes and in 1703 ruled in favor of the church body.

Several grain mills were built and in 1706 the first street called Town Street was established. It is nearly 200 feet wide and located at the end of Old Hebron Road where 50 English families settled by 1714.

Members of the Native American Paugussett Tribe still reside in Colchester. The east and northeast boundary of Colchester extends up to Lebanon and Norwich. The central village is the census designated place (CDP) and had a population of 4,781 as of the 2010 census. There is a local history museum managed by Colchester Historical Society.

The town houses the villages of Westchester and North Westchester. It was certified with the National Wildlife Federation as a Community Wildlife Habitat and is the fastest growing town. Colchester is the first town in Connecticut and 36th in the country to achieve this feat.
