Griswold, Connecticut is a town on the northeastern edge of New London County. It has a population of more than 12,000. Griswold CT contains the areas of Hopeville, Doaneville, Rixtown, Glasgo, and Pachaug. Both the Pachaug River and the Quinebaug River flow through the town, and water makes up over 6% of the town. This abundance of waterways is what made the place a fishing ground for the Native American tribe, the Mohegans. The waterways also drew in colonizers from England.
Settlers soon established ironworks, saw mills, and corn mills, and other businesses. Originally the northern part of Preston, the local population grew and Griswold was incorporated in 1815 as a separate town. The town got its name from Roger Griswold, the 22nd Governor of Connecticut and Judge of the Connecticut Supreme Court. Griswold holds on to its historic roots with many historical landmarks and attractions making it on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Kinne Cemetery has been in use since 1713. The Timothy Lester Farmstead was built in 1741. There’s Avery House, also known as the Hopeville Pond Park House, which was built in 1770.
