East Windsor, Connecticut is a town located in Hartford County that comprises five sections: Broad Brook, Melrose, Scantic, Warehouse Point, and Windsorville. In 1633, English settlers laid claim to the area now known as Windsor, which included East Windsor. However, no English settlers lived on the east side of the river for fear of the Podunk tribe. This was, until William Pynchon arrived. Pynchon was also the founder of Springfield, Massachusetts.
In 1636, he erected a warehouse for his settlement’s transshipment of goods. This place is now known as ‘Warehouse Point’ and is the oldest of the 5 sections. For 132 years, Warehouse Point near Enfield Falls made up the southern border of Springfield, Massachusetts. However, in 1768, the Connecticut Colony annexed it. On 10th May of the same year, East Windsor split from Windsor proper.Due to its close proximity to the Connecticut River, East Windsor had fertile soil that was perfect for growing crops like oats, hay, and corn.
The strategic location also turned it into a vital port for shipment and trade. Merchants on both sides of the river shipped a variety of produce such as timber, livestock, bricks, and wheat. They also imported sugar, molasses, salt, glass, ceramics, and more. Small scale shipbuilding also took place at Warehouse Point.
In 1818, East Windsor resident Solomon Ellsworth Jr. discovered bones that would later be identified as dinosaur fossils. These were the first bones to be known as a dinosaur and would lead to the dinosaur discovery craze later on in the century. When the 1900s rolled around, Connecticut shade tobacco emerged as the dominant crop.
