Essex, Connecticut is a town that is located in Middlesex County. Essex CT is situated in southern Connecticut and lies on the Connecticut River. It initially started off as a part of Saybrook. Back then, it was known as the Pettipaug or Potapaug Quarter.  In 1774, they built the first war vessel in Connecticut, the Oliver Cromwell. During the War of 1812, the place was raided by the British in 1814 , who burned down 28 ships. This put it on the (rather short) list of American towns that a foreign power has attacked.

The area soon separated and isolated itself from Saybrook. It turned into its own town in 1852, getting the name Essex in 1854. In 1859, the towns of Ivoryton and Centerbrook became a part of Essex in 1859.  Shipbuilding played an enormous role in Essex’s past, and so the town was the principal port of Saybrook up until 1871. According to the US Census Bureau, the town of Essex has a total area of nearly 12 square miles, of which over 90% is land with the rest being water.

The town of Essex is composed of three different areas, which are Centerbrook, Ivoryton, and Essex Village. The public school, Essex Elementary School educates over 500 students for grades K-5.
