The town of Harwinton, Connecticut is situated in eastern Litchfield County. The highschool of the town is Lewis S. Mills. The town was established in 1737. The name of the town is partly a mix of the ‘Har’ from Hartford and the ‘win’ from Windsor, adding the suffix ‘-ton’ to form Harwinton. It is circumscribed toward the northwest by the city of Torrington and toward the east by Hartford County. Hartford, the state capital, is 23 miles toward the east, and Bristol is 11 miles toward the southeast.

There are 2 main communities of Harwinton: Harwinton Center and Campville. Connecticut Route 4 connects the city to Torrington in the northwest and to Hartford in the east. Route 118 connects the town west to Litchfield center, wit a junction for the expressway of Route 8 in the west side of Harwinton. Route 222 runs south from Harwinton to Thomaston center. Route 72 leads south then goes east to the Bristol town.
