Salem is a  town in New London County, located in the heart of South-Eastern Connecticut, USA. This  town is different from the one in Massachusetts which was infamous for its Witch Trials. With a total area of 29.8 square miles, Salem of Connecticut has a rich cover of fertile land and water bodies. Salem was incorporated  in the year 1819. Since then, agriculture has been the backbone of Salem’s economy. In the early 20th century, this fertile town caught the attention of millionaire Frederick C, Rawolle, Jr.   Mr Rawolle purchased thousands of acres of land in this town. His land is one of the first sites of rural electrification in the country.

The Bingham Family

The town of Salem can take one through the beautiful traverns of history. Today a small bedroom community, the town was once home to  adventurer Hiram Bingham III. It was Mr Bingham who discovered the city of Machu Picchu in Peru. During the Nazi regime, his son was instrumental in rescuing thousands of Jews. The very first town library of Salem was a donation made in 1928, by the popular Bingham family. On popular demand, a brand new public library was inaugurated in the year 2004. The original library now stands vacant.

Historical Landmarks

The Salem Congregational Church, built in 1840, is at the centre of the town’s green. The Music Vale Seminary once stood about half a mile south of the green. Barring a few changes in the last decade, the town’s green has stood the test of time for two centuries now.

The town hall, library, recreational fields, and Salem School are all located near the town’s green.  Sites in Salem that are now a part of the National Registry of Historic places are:

  • Abel H. Fish House at Buckley Hill and Rathbun Hill Roads
  • Salem Historic District on state Route 85
  • Ebenezer Tiffany House at 460 Darling Road
  • Woodbridge Farm at 29, 30, and 90 Woodbridge Road

Salem Apple Festival: Salem’s Annual Apple festival is a community pride. Hosted on the town green the festival is held in October every year. One can enjoy delicacies like apple pies, apple fritters, hot dogs with apple sauerkraut, to name a few. In conjunction with the festival, the Salem Public Library holds its annual book sale at Salem School. Besides the unique history and traditions, the town of Salem has its own sense of humour. The Witch Meadow Lake and Witch Meadow Campground in Salem, Connecticut, are a symbol of irony. They stand as reminders to the  infamous witch trials of Salem, Massachusetts.
