Kent, Connecticut is a town located in the northwestern County of Litchfield. Sectioned in 1737 and settled in about 1739, it shares the western border with New York State. The town got named after Kent of England. Kent, incorporated in 1739, happened to be a thriving farming community and iron ore producer. Presently, Kent is a rural residential community consisting of Flanders, the Cobble and Bull’s Bridge. Bull’s Bridge gets its name from one of the last covered bridges of the state.
Constructed in 1842, the Bull’s Bridge has one lane and features a lattice truss design patented by Ithiel Town, an architect and engineer. Bull’s Bridge spans the Housatonic River. It was once a part of a major highway running from Hartford to Newburgh and New York on the Hudson River. Macedonia Brook State Park was inaugurated in 1918 with a donation of 1,552 acres from the White Memorial Foundation of Litchfield. Ever since, it has grown to a size of 2,300 acres used for outdoor recreation. It also harbours the beautiful Appalachia.
The park also comprises campgrounds, a small hilltop lake, extensive trails, a venue for picnics and the Macedonia Brook. There are numerous grills set up around the park. From the peaks on the Blue Trail, hikers can view the Taconic Mountains and the Catskill Mountains. Kent Falls State Park was only Kent Falls before its renovation from 2005 from 2006. It is often called “The Jewel of the Inland Parks” with its views of seventeen waterfalls. The wetlands located in Warren feed these falls and empty into the Housatonic River. It directly crosses the highway from the park.
A trail winds for a quarter of a mile up along the falls. It is steep, rising up to 250 feet in just a quarter mile. In 2006, the trail renovation was done which cost $1.1 million. It provided new viewing platforms and a redesigned trail. Swimming was allowed earlier near the fall. However, serious accidents and damaging of the environment, have led to the shutting down of the area along the water above the bottom level. This action was taken by Connecticut state law enforcement.
