Ansonia, Connecticut is a city in New Haven County, United States. Situated on the Naugatuck River, Ansonia CT is immediately north of Derby and about 12 miles northwest of New Haven. The town’s ZIP code is 06401. In 1844, a man named Anson Green Phelps acquired land along the east side of the river.

Today, this is Ansonia’s downtown section. A canal was dug for river power to drive the factories and businesses in the new industrial village. Phelps decided to call this industrial area Ansonia after his first name. Ansonia became the most populous area of Derby, boasting numerous factories.

Ansonia is also referred to as The Copper City. It is well known for its  heavy machine manufacturing industry in the lower Naugatuck Valley. The Ansonia Clock Company was founded here in 1851. Business boomed until it didn’t, and the company shut down in 1914, right before World War I erupted.

The state chartered Ansonia as a borough of Derby in 1864, but the 1871 amendment granted is full municipal privileges. In 1889, the State General Assembly granted Ansonia the status of a town, making it the 168th township in the state of Connecticut.

The Borough, Hilltop, West Ansonia, and Elm Street areas became the town of Ansonia. In 1893, Ansonia was incorporated as a city, consolidating with the coterminous town and the old borough.

The population of the city is around 20,000. The city is served by the Metro-North Railroad. Ansonia Station is a stop on the Waterbury line, connecting to New York’s Grand Central Station. Ansonia also is served by the Connecticut Transit bus carrier and Connecticut Route 8 passes by Ansonia.
