The town of Brooklyn, Connecticut is situated in Windham County, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population count was 8,210. The town center village is listed by the US Census Bureau as a census-designated place. The district of East Brooklyn is listed as well under separate census-designated place. Settled in the late 17th century and incorporated as its own town in 1786, Brooklyn CT is presently one of the fastest growing towns in Windham County. It is named after the Quinebaug River, or “Brook Line”. It forms the town’s eastern boundary. It was originally the land of the Wabaquasset, and then Brooklyn incorporated itself as a town separate from Canterbury and Pomfret in May 1786. Brooklyn is home to the Brooklyn Fair, which is America’s oldest operating agricultural fair. It is also the home to the Brooklyn Correctional Institution, which is a state-run medium security prison. Brooklyn is responsible for holding the 1833 trial of Prudence Crandall, a schoolteacher who was charged with the crime of educating black students.

Brooklyn is the ultimate resting place of Revolutionary War General Israel Putnam. Although he was originally buried in an above ground tomb in Brooklyn’s South Cemetery, and his remains had to be moved because of the excessive visitors.
