Canaan, Connecticut is a town situated in the northwest corner of the state, in Litchfield County. Canaan CT shares its northern border with Massachusetts and is not to be confused with North Canaan, which is another state in Connecticut. The town was incorporated in 1739. The name “Canaan” is derived from Hebrew. In the Bible, Canaan was the son of Ham and grandson of Noah. Back then, the town of Canaan included North Canaan. However, Canaan and North Canaan were informally divided in 1769 and the Second Ecclesiastical Society was formed.

Iron production was the main industry up to the 1800s. However, during the 19th century and into the 20th century, the main occupations of the town were agriculture and dairy farming. The Borden milk factory, which is located within the borders of the town used to process milk for shipment. Canaan is bordered to the north by North Canaan, to the east by Norfolk, to the south by Cornwall, and to the west, across the Housatonic River, by Salisbury.

The principal communities of the town are Huntsville, Lower City,  South Canaan, and Falls Village, which is the town center.      Presently, North Canaan is mostly residential and continues to quarry sand, lime and gravel.

U.S. Route 7, Route 63 and Route 126 are the routes that serve this town. US 7 leads north into Massachusetts and south to Danbury, while Route 63 leads southeast to Litchfield. Route 126 is a local road that passes through the center of Falls Village and runs north along the Housatonic River.
