Cheshire, Connecticut is located in the Central Naugatuck Valley. The town was once part of Wallingford, however, it separated from Wallingford in 1780 and was incorporated as a town. Due to the agriculture industry in the town, Cheshire CT has been referred to as the Bedding Plant Capital of Connecticut.

Before 1829, the Connecticut town of Prospect was a part of Cheshire. However, it split apart and became its own town. During the Cold War era (1945-1991), there was a fallout shelter constructed in the region in 1966 as a precautionary measure in case nuclear war broke out.

The shelter was constructed at a place beneath the local AT&T Tower, and is known as the Cheshire ATT Facility.

The town contains two correctional facilities. These are the Cheshire Correctional Institution, opened in 1910 and Manson Youth Institute, opened in 1982.

The 2010 census stated that the town had a population of 29,261. As of the census of 2000, there were 28,543 people, 9,349 households, and 7,254 families residing in the town. The population density was 867.4 people per square mile. There were 9,588 housing units at an average density of 291.4 per square mile.

The central region of the town contains an establishment known as the Cheshire Village.
