Danbury, Connecticut is a city in Fairfield County that is named for Danbury in Essex, England. Danbury CT has been nicknamed ‘Hat City’ due to the fact that it was at the center of the American hat industry for a period in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Danbury even has a mineral named after it, the gemstone and healing crystal danburite. Danbury was settled by colonists in 1685, when eight families moved from the areas that are now Norwalk and Stamford. Back then, it was called ‘Pahquioque’ by its namesake, the Algonquian-speaking Pahquioque Native Americans. It was also called Paquiack, meaning ‘open plain’ or ‘cleared land’. The Pahquioque tribe are believed to have been a band of the Paugusset people, who occupied lands along the Still River. In 1685. the original English settlers arrived to Danbury in the form of James Beebe, Judah Gregory, Samuel Benedict, and his brother James Benedict. They all purchased land from the Pahquioque in 1685. The settlers actually chose the name ‘Swampland’ for the town due to the wetlands.
However, in October 1687, the general court decreed the name Danbury. Once the American Revolution occurred, Danbury functioned as an important military supply depot for the Continental Army. The 16-year-old daughter of American Colonel Henry Ludington, Sybil Ludington, rode for 40 miles in the early hours of the night on April 26, 1777 to warn the people of Danbury of the approach of British regulars, This helped her father’s forces gather in time to mount a defense.
