Darien, Connecticut is a town that is situated in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Darien is on the Long Island Sound between the cities of Stamford and Norwalk. Darien CT is rather close to New York City, being located just 37 miles northeast of it. There are two Metro-North stations that link the town to Grand Central Terminal. Darien is a rather tiny town. With a land area of only 13 square miles, Darien is the smallest town on Connecticut’s Gold Coast. In 1641, men from the New Haven, Wethersfield and Norwalk cleared the land and settled in Darien. However, it wasn’t until 1739 that the Middlesex Society of the Town of Stamford built the first community church. This church is now the First Congregational Church of Darien. During the Revolution, the Tories raided the town several times. The novel ‘Tory Hole’ by Louise Hall Tharp is set in the Loyalist-Patriot conflict in Darien. Middlesex Parish became incorporated as the Town of Darien in 1820.
Darien’s name has a history to it. Some wanted to name the town “Belleville” in honor of Thaddeus Bell, a veteran of the revolutionary war. Bell himself rejected this honor. A sailor who had traveled to Isthmus of Darien in Spain, suggested the name Darien. The people of the town then ended up adopting this name. Darien is a town with the youngest population of any non-college town in Connecticut. It has a high rate of marriage too. With a population of 20,732 in 2010 census, Darien may be a small town in terms of area, but it is a rather active community.
