Eastford, Connecticut is a town in the northern portion of Windham County and contains a major portion of the Natchaug State ForestEastford CT was settled by Englishmen in the early 1700s. The place was mainly a rural agricultural community. It was light on industry, mainly focusing on cotton batting, twine, and wooden handles, which were predominant in the region.

In 1847, the town separated from its parent town of Ashford. The area presumably derived its name as a result of being the ‘east’ern part of Ash‘ford’.

The town has erected a monument about their hero Nathaniel Lyon, who was the first Union general to be killed in the Civil War. There is also a route along the Boston Post Road that used to facilitate commerce and communication in the past.

There are three main communities of Eastford. They are Phoenixville, East Phoenixville, and North Ashford. Out of these, Phoenixville is a small hamlet near Still River that grew up around a now-abandoned twine mill.

The main historical places of the region are Benjamin Bosworth House, Natchaug Forest Lumber Shed, and Summer-Carpenter House. The state had another Eastford at one point, but this place was renamed to East Windsor after separation from Windsor.
