According to the 2000 census, Hampton, Connecticut has a population of 1758. The small town of Hampton CT is in Windham County, located in the northeast or Quiet Corner of Connecticut. Originally it was the territory of Nipmucks, a native American Tribe but the area was settled in 1712. The land under Hampton was originally shared by the towns Pomfret and Windham. Mainly people were brought from the Massachusetts Bay Colony so that they could be settled in Hampton.
In 1786, the town was incorporated from various Connecticut towns: Brooklyn, Windham, Pomfret, Canterbury, and Mansfield. The second oldest church of the region, The Congregational Church, is still used. Some parts of the church are from 1754. While the men were busy in the Continental Army, Sally Bowers and other women had constructed ‘The House The Women Built’. This structure is still preserved. The Liberty Pole of 1849 is present in Clark’s Corner.
It was made by Jonathan Clark and records the distance to Hartford and other towns. The New England Railroad and New York brought tourism to the region in 1872 and this made Hampton a summer colony. The Hampton Hill was listed as National Register of historic places and the central village was preserved in 1982.
The notable locations of the area are the Hampton Hill Historic District and Hemlock Glen Industrial Archaeological District that were added to the National Register of Historic Places in the year 1982 and 2007 respectively. Other places of interest are Sharpe Hill Vineyard, James L. Goodwin State Forest, Mansfield Hollow State Park, and Mansfield Hollow State Lake.
