Ledyard, Connecticut is a town in New London County, United States situated beside the Thames River. Per the census in 2010, Ledyard CT has a population of over 15,000. The town was separated from Groton in 1836 by an act of the Connecticut Legislature. It was named after Colonel William Ledyard, a Revolutionary War officer killed at the Battle of Groton Heights.
38.1 square miles of Ledyard is land and 1.9 square miles is water for a round total area of 40 square miles. Ledyard borders the east bank of the Thames River in southeastern Connecticut. The northern half of the Naval Submarine Base New London is in the southwest corner of Ledyard. Ledyard has a designated Glacial Park consisting of a series of end moraine and outwash deposits.
This area encompasses a segment of the Ledyard Moraine, which is a clast-supported boulder deposit that is anomalous in nature. The principal communities of Ledyard are Ledyard Center and the Gales Ferry section.
