New Haven, Connecticut is a coastal city in a county of the same name, New Haven County.  New Haven CT is situated on New Haven Harbor, which is on the northern shore of Long Island Sound. New Haven has a population of over 130,000. This makes it the second most populous city in Connecticut, only behind Bridgeport.  New Haven is the principal municipality of Greater New Haven, also known as the New Haven-Milford Metropolitan Area.

New Haven was America’s first ever planned city.  It was colonized by English Puritans in 1638, who also drove out the Native American Quinnipiac tribe. One year later, the English settlers developed a ‘Nine Square Plan’ wherein eight streets were laid out in a 4×4 grid, similar to a tic-tac-toe board. At the center of it all was the New Haven Green, a square located dead center of Downtown New Haven. New Haven Green is now designated as a National Historic Landmark. The Nine Square Plan gained recognition as a National Planning Landmark by the American Planning Association.

The town got the name ‘Newhaven’ in 1640, being a newly found ‘haven’ for the settlers. Haven in this context meant harbor or port. The New Haven Colony soon began to form around this settlement, distinct from the previously established Connecticut Colony in the north, which was built around Hartford.  In 1701, New Haven was designated as the co-capital of Connecticut. However, Hartford was granted sole governance in 1873 due to its more central location and positioning.

New Haven is home to the prestigious Yale University. Yale is integral to the city’s economy, being its biggest taxpayer and employer. Healthcare, professional services, retail, and financial services are the other industries that contribute to economic activity in New Haven. The first public tree planting program in America took place in New Haven. The program produced a canopy of mature trees including some large elms. This is why New Haven is also referred to as ‘The Elm City’. Although, New Haven is no longer the capital of Connecticut, the city has prided itself as being the cultural capital of Connecticut thanks to the multitude of music venues, theaters, and museums in the area.
