Norwich, Connecticut is a city in New London County, United States with a population of 40,493 according to the 2010 United States Census. Norwich CT is also referred to as ‘The Rose of New England’. The main rivers that flow into the city are the Yantic, the Shetucket and the Quinebaug that form a harbour. Several Norwich neighborhoods maintain independent identities and are recognized by official signs marking their boundaries. The neighborhoods within Norwich are Norwichtown, Bean Hill, Yantic, Taftville, Greeneville, Occum, East Great Plains, Thamesville, Laurel Hill, and Chelsea.

Norwichtown was founded in 1659 by three people: Major John Mason, Reverend James Fitch, and Thomas Leffingwell. At first, the land for Norwich belonged to the local Native Mohegan Sachem Uncas, but it was purchased.

The town centre was a neighborhood called Norwichtown primarily for the agricultural farming community. By the early 19th century, the center of Norwich had effectively moved to the Chelsea neighborhood. The official buildings like the City Hall, courts, post office, and the large 19th-century urban blocks all happens to be located in the harbour area. The merchants of Norwich shipped goods directly from England until the Stamp Act of 1764 forced Norwich to become more self-sufficient. Thereafter, factories and large mills came readily into existence. The largest was the gargantuan Ponemah Mill.

Norwich supported the American Revolution by supplying ships, soldiers and munitions. It also emerged as a center for activity for the Sons of Liberty.
