Plymouth, Connecticut has a population of 12,000+. It is not to be confused with Plymouth, Massachusetts (home of Plymouth Rock). Plymouth is located in Litchfield County and named after Plymouth City in Devon, England. Plymouth CT includes the villages of Plymouth Center, Terryville, and Pequabuck. Plymouth is known nationally for its clock manufacturing, and many antique and vintage Plymouth clocks are still sold. According to historical records, the city was founded by a group of people who believed they had found a large deposit of lead.
This fabled ‘lead mine’ either never existed or is yet to be discovered. The oldest home in the community is on Route 6, and dates as far back as 1690. George Washington traveled through the area in the 1790s to visit relatives and stay away from the coastline.Plymouth was incorporated in 1795 as Northbury. The town was used as a burying ground for Waterbury. Plymouth’s history cannot be discussed without mentioning the Terry family.
Eli Terry wanted to manufacture clocks. Towards this, he partnered with Seth Thomas and Silas Hoadley and set up a factory in Plymouth’s Greystone section. The inventor and clockmaker then let Hoadley and Thomas run the factory and opened his own clock factory near Carter Road in Plymouth Center. Eli Terry’s son Eli Terry Jr. joined another man interested in the cabinet and lock industry. Together, they opened the Eagle Lock Company in 1833. It quickly rose to become the largest maker of trunks and cabinets worldwide.
Both World Wars helped them further solidify their position thanks to defense contracts. In 1975, the company closed and the abandoned site was burned down save for one building. Every building apart from this undamaged one was either torn down or had floors removed. Plymouth today has diversified buildings and sites such as the Plymouth Center Historic District. The town has evolved into an industrialized area while maintaining its rural character and colonial charm.
