In the year 1686, the General Assembly allowed the first settlers of that area to establish a plantation on the region of land that was situated between Norwich and Stonington.

In the year 1687, the region was incorporated as Preston, after the UK city of Preston in Lancashire, England. Early occupations in the area included shoemaking, metalsmithing, shipbuilding, and brickmaking. There were three distinct settlements in the town when it was first established, Long Society, Preston City, and Poquetanuck.

Preston today is a rural town and has a large number of assets on the National Register of historic places, including the Preston City Historic District and the Long Society Meetinghouse.
