On the borders of Rhode Island, towards the northeast corner of the state, lies The Windham County town of Putnam, Connecticut. During mid-1700, it was the sawmills and farming which supported the local economy of Putnam CT. The advent of the Industrial Revolution has brought several cotton mills and railway lines. The original name of Putnam was Aspinock. It was a part of Killingly, located in New England. It got its name after the Revolutionary War General Israel Putnam. Then, it became a part of the mill town in the year 1855, which was formed from sections of Killingly, Pomfret, and Thompson. Putnam was a major provider of clothing and other essentials to the Civil War soldiers. The state had several mills, and the train had good connectivity, which eased the system of transportation to supply to the people without any blocks. The Town of Putnam came across a jinx of events, which eventually turns the course of history. During the year 1955, on August 19th, the state was affected by heavy floods. It was then followed by hurricanes which hit Connecticut within a week.
On August 11th, it was recorded almost four and six inches of rain. It was then Hurricane Danie, which gave 14 inches (360 mm) of rain on between August 18th and 19th. Thus, there was a heavy flood in the state, including the famous Quinebaug River which was heavily flooded. The aftermath of the rains had devastated a lot of homes, businesses, and factories. Several floating magnesium barrels bursts and were illuminated even during the night. The entire railroad was washed away because of this. Today, the River Mills Heritage Trail along with factories and the mansion of textile executive George Morse, are some of the prominent tourist attractions.
