Roxbury, Connecticut is a town that is located in the northwest corner of Connecticut in the Litchfield Hills. Roxbury is in southern Litchfield County, bordered to the south by New Haven County. It is 16 miles northeast of Danbury and the same distance west of Waterbury. The town was initially known as Shepaug, a Mahican word which means “rocky water”. Roxbury may have been descriptively named after this translation, or its name was transferred from Roxbury, Massachusetts.
Roxbury was settled in 1713, when it was a part of Woodbury. The town was incorporated in 1796 and the residents here discovered valuable natural resources like iron ore as well as granite, within town bounds and made Mine Hill. A smelting furnace and a quarry were also built following this. A silver mine was also opened and spathic iron was found later. A smelting furnace was built for making steel.
Granite was found in huge amounts in many of Mine Hill’s quarries which provided the building material for the ore roasters and blast furnace and also for the wonders of the world like the Brooklyn Bridge and Grand Central Terminal in New York City. Presently, Roxbury is well known for its peaceful environment. Over the years, the town has attracted assorted residents like famous celebrities including Seth Warner, Ethan Allen, Alexander Calder, Marilyn Monroe, and Arthur Miller.
The principal communities of Roxbury are Roxbury Station, Judd’s Bridge, Roxbury Falls, and Roxbury Center. Three historic places in Roxbury are included on the National Register of Historic Places. They are the Roxbury Station Historic District, Roxbury Center, and Roxbury Iron Mine and Furnace Complex.
