Salisbury in connecticut

Salisbury, Connecticut is a town located in northwesternmost portion of Connecticut. It has its western border with New York and eastern border with Massachusetts. The town of Salisbury CT was incorporated in 1741 and is rich in iron ore.

As a result, mining was one of the earliest industries in the region. It gained fame during American Revolution and in the 19th century quality gun material was found in the region. The northwest corner of the region contains the Massachusetts-New York-Connecticut tri-state area marker.

Salisbury contains many old structures. However, some of these were replaced in the late 20th century by more modern ones. Traces of iron ore were also found in Old Hill or Ore Hill in 1731 by John Pell and Ezekiel Ashley. Through the Federal period, until about 1920, the region was quite important for the iron industry.

More iron mines opened in the western part of the town, though none of these were very large mines. One of the major disadvantages of these iron ores was the fact that they were not located near the rivers. Thus, it was not possible to take these to the market at a reasonable cost. The solution was to convert the iron into a form of wrought iron so that gun barrels could use it. This proved to be very profitable for the region and Salisbury iron became critical for the arms industry of Connecticut in the 19th century. Iron was also used for the railroad car wheels until it was substituted by steel wheels.

After World War One, however the iron industry of the region slowly became inactive. After World War Two, there was a plan to revive it but it never came into existence. A part of the Salisbury Iron District still exists in the region. The Scoville Memorial Library of the region was established in 1803 and was the first library in U.S. that was open to the common people without any fees.
