Somers, Connecticut is a town in Tolland County. The U.S. Census Bureau has listed the center of the town as a census-designated place (CDP). Somers is situated on the border of Massachusetts and less than 10 miles from Springfield. Because of this proximity, Somers is a part of the Springfield New England City and Town Area (NECTA). The town derived its name from John Somers, 1st Baron Somers. In the 17th century, Somers was a part of the Agawam Plantation. The plantation eventually became Springfield, Massachusetts in 1641. Somers was named Wallop, but this was changed to East Enfield.
In 1682, the Enfield Parish broke off from the main settlement. A few years later (1689), Benjamin Jones was the first settler to arrive in Somers, then known as East Enfield. In the winter, he and his family returned to Enfield, fearing the Native Americans. However, in 1711, several more families like the Megregory, Root, Pease, and Kibbe settled the area.
1734 was when East Enfield became a town renamed as Somers. In 1749, Somers joined the Connecticut Colony. Somers is divided into many distinct areas such as Somersville, North Somers, Hall Hill, Gulf Road, Billings Road, Woodcrest Village, and Osborn Place. It also contains Somers Center, which is the location of Somers Historic District. The Four Town Fair takes place in Somers. The fair is typically held after the third weekend in September and is one of the oldest fairs in the US.
