The town of Sprague, Connecticut lies on the border of Windham County. It is situated on the northern region of New London County. Sprague CT comprises the hamlets of Hanover, Versailles, and Baltic. The 1700s saw the emergence of the European settlements. The next century was when Sprague was incorporated from Lisbon and Franklin, in the year 1861. The town of Sprague was christened after William Sprague III who was based in Rhode Island. He was a mill tycoon as well as a politician of name and fame. William was also the Governor of Rhode Island and a U.S. Senator.

In 1856, he had laid out plans for “the largest mill on the Western Continent” in eastern Connecticut. His demise occurred in the same year. William had many state holdings which included a Baltic based cotton mill, thus paving the path for the town to emerge as the classic New England mill town. His sons constructed the Baltic Cotton Mill in the about to be structured Baltic village. Thus, Sprague attracted many entrepreneurs to come in pursuit of it.

His mill village lay on the banks of the Shetucket River in the southwest corner of the town. The main mill had burned down in 1877. However, the Baltic Power Company went on to operate a mill at the very same spot until 1967. In the 21st century, Sprague is a fast evolving ground for ecotourism, having conducted their first ever River Fest which celebrates the local Shetucket River. The event attracts kayakers, canoers, tubers and nature lovers. The annual Three Villages Festival is held alongside the River Fest in October. Sprague’s well-preserved industrial architecture, open spaces, lush fields, public ball field and Shetucket River make it a vital part of the 35-town Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor.

Two individual buildings and a historical district in Sprague are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are:

  •   Ashlawn
  •   Baltic Historic District
  •   William Park House
