The town of Sterling, Connecticut derives its name after John Sterling, who was an early settler in the area. The town is situated in the Eastern region of Windham County and shares a boundary with Rhode Island. Initially, it was the part of Northern Voluntown, but after the CT Assembly’s approval in 1794, Sterling was formed. During the American Revolutionary War, Jean Baptiste Donatien de Vimeu paraded and camped in the town, while joining the forces of George Washington on the Hudson River, in 1781.

The city witnessed its first cotton mill on the Quandock River, in the year 1800. The mill was known as the American Manufacturing Company, or the Potter’s Factory, and was involved in high quality cotton textile production. The quarry is an active industry even today in Sterling and began its journey in the middle of the 19th century.  The Sterling Hill Historic District is included in the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, Dorrance Inn is also included in the National Register of Historic Places. 

There is also the popular 3.6 mile route Plainfield Pike that Jean Baptiste’s army troop passed through the American Revolution. Moreover, Charles Dow, from the Dow Jones fame was also born in the Sterling community.
