The population of this town was 9458 as per the 2010 census. According to the US Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 48.7 square miles of which 46.9 sq miles is land and 1.7 sq miles or 3.51% is water body. Thompson has many small ponds, such as Little Pond and Long Pond, and also two significant lakes: West Thompson Lake and Quaddick Reservoir. Contained within the perimeters are several moderately sized rivers, such as the French River and Five Mile River. Both of them are tributaries of the Quinebaug River, which also runs through Thompson. One of the highest points in Thompson along with the surrounding villages is Fort Hill which is 649 feet above sea level. The city is situated 64 miles southwest of Boston and 110 miles northeast of Bridgeport. It is also on the 41st parallel north, putting it on the similar latitude as Lake Ohrid of Albania.
