West Haven, Connecticut is a place in New Haven County. Incorporated rather recently in 1961, West Haven CT is the youngest city in the Constitution State. Ironically, it is one of the state’s oldest settlements, with settlers arriving as early as in 1648.
Earlier, it was a part of the New Haven Colony. In 1719, it became a separate parish. However, it remained a part of New Haven until 1822.
Many tried and failed to incorporate the city. West Haven and North Milford tried in the years 1786 and 1787, but it was all for nought. In 1921, West Haven split from Orange to become a separate town. This eventually led to it becoming incorporated as a city in 1961.
The city has a total area of 11 square miles, of which 10.75 square miles is land. It had a population of 55,464 in 2010.
Local Heritage: The Legacy of Savin Rock Amusement Park
The Savin Rock section of West Haven was the site of the Savin Rock Amusement Park. It began in the late 19th century as a popular seaside resort in the region. It evolved into a general amusement park in the 20th century, but unfortunately closed in the 1960s.
West Haven has 3.5 miles of public beaches, which are the main attraction in the area. Oak Street Beach is one of the favorites, but there is also Seabluff Beach. Fort Nathan Hale is a historical site, Chapel Street is for the shopaholics and and the It Adventure Ropes Course is for Westies seeking some fun.
