Westbrook is the birthplace of David Bushnell, who invented the world’s first submarine, the American Turtle. There are actually three islands in the Long Island Sound that Westbrook encompasses: Salt Island, Duck Island, and Menunketesuck Island. Salt Island is the smallest and easternmost island.
It is a mere 500 feet away from the mainland. It is less than an acre large. Duck Island Landing is the westernmost of the coastal islands. Menunketesuck Island is the largest of the three. The island is home to a variety of waterfowl such as the great egret, black-crowned night heron, glossy ibis, least tern, and American oystercatcher. For this reason, Audubon has designated the island as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area. It is now a national wildlife refuge and closed to visitors.
