The origins of Willington date back to 1720. It was in this year that 8 Englishmen purchased the region, naming it Wellington. The town was incorporated in 1727. In 1785, Willington encompassed certain portions of both Windham County in the west and Hartford County in the east. The town then joined Tolland County.

During the early years, the water from the Willimantic River was used by the townspeople for powering mills and factories. A new public library opened in the autumn of 2006. Willington was also featured on the Fox science fiction show Fringe in season 5, episode 9, Black Blotter.
