Wolcott, Connecticut is a town in New Haven County, United States whose population is 17,000+ strong. The total area of the town is 21.1 square miles. Out of this area about 20.4 square miles is land and the remaining portion is water.
Initially, the towns of Waterbury and Farmington occupied major parts of the west-central connecticut. The Connecticut Colony set up the town in 1730s and named it Farmingbury as it was the The borderlands of these two towns. ‘Farm’ington and Water‘bury’.
Although people started to live in this area as early as the 1730s, they had to fall back on their parent town of either Waterbury or Farmington for identity. The residents of the region slowly became independent of the parent towns, but many still considered Farmingbury to be a part of these two towns.
1796 was the year when Farmingbury petitioned the Connecticut General Assembly and requested them to form an independent town free of Waterbury and Farmington. The vote ended in a tie, but the tie breaker was voted by Lieutenant Governor Oliver Wolcott in favor of Farmingbury becoming independent.
The name ‘Wolcott’ was given to honor the decider vote of the Lieutenant Governor. As a result, the town was incorporated in 1796 with the name Wolcott.
